Voices In My Head Review

Whose voice is loudest?

Voices in My Head is a really unique concept where players control a part of Guy Johnson's mind. He's on trial for robbing a bank and it's your job to get the outcome that's needed to win the game for you. Each player has a specific personality card that could range from having more not guilty than guilty tokens on the jury or controlling a specific area of his mind. Each round begins with the prosecutor player selecting a card and putting it under their screen so the players can see which icons are being effected this round. This is where it got interesting, the game turns into a pseudo-dexterity game. Players take turns placing their discs and pushing them to where they want them to go. If a players disc is knocked off the platform then they are not going to be controlling that area anymore. After everyone has played their discs, whoever is controlling the area on the card will get to choose what happens next. Play continues for 8 rounds and then whoever meets the objective on their goal card will be the winner.

The Good: This is a game that is unlike anything I've personally played before. I'll admit I didn't know much about the game prior to playing it. I knew it was a trial game but that's about it. When I learned about the dexterity aspect I was pleasantly surprised. It's a constant wrestling match between other players for control. There are cards and special abilities on the tokens that make it even more intense and strategic to get that control. It's so unique looking when it hits the table with the elevated platforms and the prosecutor screen going up.

The Okay: The general flow of gameplay was fine. Because you will know what is coming to an extent with the symbols on the trial card it was somewhat disappointing to leave most other parts of the brain empty. I would have liked to see cards have more than 2 options so that way players could have had more say in what was happening to manipulate the outcomes.

The Not So Good: You're going to want to play this with more than the minimum player count. I played at 3 players and while the rules modifications made the board a little busier, it still felt like it was missing something. The game needs that player interaction where 3 or 4 people are all fighting for the same spots. With 2 colors, you can just take control and avoid unless you need to retaliate.

Overall: 6.5/10

Voices in My Head is a really unique game that fell a little flat at a lower player count. Because the game is such an interesting concept, I still really want to play it with more people. I'm a sucker for anything that has a dexterity aspect to it, no matter how light it is. Something about it just warms me up inside. That sounds weird. Regardless, if you're looking for something that's a little different for your game night and you have a high player count I would absolutely give Voices in My Head a look. If you don't have that many people but are still looking for something different, I've heard great things about Unexpected Games' other title The Initiative.

Thanks to Unexpected Games and Corey Konieczka for letting me give this one a go.
