Skate: The Card Game Review

Does this land the trick or will it eat pavement?

Skate: The Card Game is a game that has players competing to land specific tricks before anyone else is able to. This is done by playing cards that match the colors of the feet on the trick card. This is done by picking up cards (pushing), playing a card (planting), mess with your opponents (kick), or refresh your hand (balance). It's no guarantee that you'll be able to land your trick though, if you have two eat pavement cards in your hand after attempting the trick, you fall and don't get the card. Once a player has collected their fifth trick, they are the winner.

The Good: I never really thought about a skateboarding card game but I'm glad somebody did. It's not a game that reinvents card games but it's a lot of fun. You have to be aware of what every player is doing at all times otherwise you may fall behind. Luckily the kick action helps to mitigate this by forcing them to discard a card that they've played.

The Okay: This game is extremely luck based. You have a huge deck and you need to pull specific colors. There are wild cards but it's still something that you'll need to hope to pull. It's minor but it can make a player have problems in a hurry.

The Not So Good: The rulebook definitely left a lot to be desired. I'm still not confident that I understand the grind concept. I think that having specific examples or images of some mechanisms would have been a lot more helpful but it's good enough to understand the core game.

Overall: 7/10

Skate: The Card Game is a really nice game that is somewhat slowed by the rulebook but when the game really starts going, it's a lot of fun. You can get a second box and expand the game to 8 players which is not something you see in a lot of small box card games like this. It's a solid way to start a game night.

Thanks to Sheltonshire Games for providing me with a review copy of the game.
