New York Pizza Delivery Review

Deliver pizzas and expand your delivery empire.

I should preface this by saying I personally know the publisher of this game but I'll keep my thoughts and opinions true. In New York Pizza Delivery from Airloom Games, players are competing to deliver the most pizzas and make the most money in process. Players will take turns doing 1 of 3 actions on their turns. They can collect ingredients from the market or blindly draw them from the top of the deck. They can build/upgrade by paying to set up shop in one of the districts. Doing this can also allow you to add permanent ingredients to your tableau allowing you to be able to fill orders easier. The last action you can do is to deliver pizzas. When you have the right mix of ingredients you can fulfill the order. You need to also be able to play enough cards from your hand to cover the delivery distance, however. If you have a free 2 moves and need to cover 5, you'll need to have 3 extra cards to get rid of. The game ends when the 3rd health inspector card comes out and whoever has the most money is the winner.

The Good: It's really cool to see the map change constantly as players are building more shops and upgrading them for better movement. If competitive isn't your cup of tea, then there's also a cooperative mode where players work together to meet specific goals. Each player still operates as their own franchise but they're essentially the same company.

The Okay: The rulebook left a lot to be desired. There are some examples of how to do things but I feel like some of the core concepts were left to my own interpretation in places. For example, movement when delivering pizzas, it only mentioned in 1 spot that you get 2 free movement spaces and I'm not even sure if that's accurate.

The Not So Good: Most of the game felt like I was picking up ingredients to get rid of them a few turns later. While picking them up is a key concept, I wish that I spent less time doing this throughout the game, especially when the goal is to deliver pizzas.

Final Thoughts: New York Pizza Delivery is a solid game that is held back by its own rulebook at times. There are a lot of interesting choices to make and having the ability to play however you want is a great touch. It can even play up to 6 players which is a tough count to have. Overall, if you want to support a smaller publisher, this is absolutely a game to do so with. I'll be very interested to see what's next from them.

Thanks to Airloom Games for providing me with a review copy.
