Marvel Dice Throne is the newest set to hit the Dice Throne universe. It features 8 of your favorite heroes all with unique abilities. If you're unfamiliar with how Dice Throne works, it's a dice battler where the players all have upgradeable heroes with special decks and abilities that they can spend action points to use. On your turn, you'll roll your dice up to 3 times and place them on your board to the attack/skill you want to use. Then you resolve damage to your opponent or they'll do a defense roll which may eliminate some of that damage or take some pot shots to your character. Then you clean up and your opponent will go. The game ends when a players health reaches zero.
I personally haven't played this series before so it's hard to compare Marvel and the original games but each character plays completely differently. Want to play as Thor, you get Mjölnir to whip around and damage players. Dr. Strange gets special spells. Spiderman will web other players to slow them down. It's all very thematic to the characters.
The Good: I'm a sucker for throwing dice around. I really am. It's all luck based with some things you can do here and there to modify rolls but having the ability to upgrade powers is awesome and really gives another layer to the game. It's so satisfying when you roll 5 of a kind to trigger your super ability. The games that I've played have all felt really balanced. I've never steamrolled my opponents and vise versa.
The Okay: With any game that has a lot of different characters, there can be a bit of a learning curve when it comes to actually understanding how best to use them. Let alone master them. There are varying degrees of difficulty to each character and me being me decided to try the more difficult characters first because if I can be good with them then I can be good with any of them, right?
The Not So Good: My biggest complaint is that instead of one big box, I have 3 that I need to find space for. I really hope that there's an opportunity for a big box for better storage and ease of transport later on. One other small gripe that I had was the card quality. They're not bad but they'll definitely show some wear and tear sooner than others. I plan to sleeve mine.
Final Thoughts: I loved Marvel Dice Throne. It's like high stakes Yahtzee. This is a game that's easy to learn but difficult to master and the fact that it's completely compatible with the rest of the series means that there's a lot of possibilities and combinations. I can absolutely recommend this game and I'd say that there's more Dice Throne in my future.
Thanks to The Op and Roxley Games for providing me with a review copy.
