When I first saw Lost Ruins of Arnak, I immediately thought to myself, wow there's a lot going on with this. This was my new gamer perspective who liked the idea of chunky games but wasn't sure that I liked the execution. Admittedly I've only been in the hobby for a little over a year now, but after playing it, I can't get enough! This game surprised me in every single way.
The Good: Pretty much everything. From the variability of the boards (a beginner and advanced side) and the huge deck of cards that adds a ton of replayibility to the game. Not to mention all of the different guardians and assistants. It is so satisfying when what should be a pretty pedestrian turn ends up being a huge swing because you played a perfect combo of cards.
The Okay: Set up time is somewhat of an issue with this game. There are a lot of small bits and bobs with this game that need to be scattered around the board. This is by no means a game breaking issue. It's just a slight hassle. I also with that there was an organizer in the box. This is one of the few games that I'd consider purchasing an organizer for to alleviate set up and tear down.
The Not So Good: To be perfectly honest, I can't fill anything into this area. Yes, the game has its flaws but there is nothing that I outright hated or disliked. I can be picky and say that I'm not the biggest fan of the meeples. To me, they were just too big and clunky. I like a nice sleek meeple. That's a sentence I've never used before.
Overall Score: 9/10 (those darn chunky meeples)
This is a game that I could play over and over again. It's complex enough to really stretch your brain but it's easy enough that I was able to teach my wife, who does not like heavier games. I cannot wait to play this with the Expedition Leaders expansion so I can immerse myself even more in this world that CGE has created.
