Hunters of the Lost Creatures or as I like to call it, how did that just happen?!
Hunters of the Lost Creatures is a new Kickstarter coming out in May that the publisher was kind enough to send a prototype my way. In the game, each player selects a hunter of choice in each color. There is 4 biomes that correspond to the color with various animals. These animals all have a value. Most are a positive number but there are some cards that will let you steal cards or there's trolls that are -10 points. You don't want those. Each player will play a hunter of the desired card, if you're the only one who chose that color, you capture the animal for your park. If everyone else selected it, it got scared off and is discarded. The game goes this way until a biome is completely empty and then it scores. Whoever has the highest score at the end of the game wins.
The Good: There is a surprising amount of strategy that goes into this game. Especially at two players. You need to decide if you want to go all in or try to go for the block. In the one game that I played with my wife, I somehow ended up with all four of the trolls in my park. We didn't even bother to score that game. She's much better at games than I am. The art style is also really interesting. It has fantastical creatures like a duocorn (unicorn with two horns, of course) or a butterfly (stick of butter with wings and a fly face).
The Okay: The game is an excellent filler game. It plays in about 20 minutes and it makes for an excellent filler game. If you're looking for something to be the staple of your night, this probably isn't it but if you want a filler or warm up game then I highly recommend it.
The Not So Good: It would have been nice to see some additional power up cards or interesting ways to counter some of the take that cards other than the Park Closed ones.
As always, I don't give a score to Kickstarter games. I will say that this game is a lot of fun and it has some really interesting plays to it. Overall, I would highly recommend checking out Hunters of the Lost Creatures. It's quick, it's silly, and it's just a ton of fun. You can teach it in about 2 minutes and anyone can play it without much hesitation.
